Amr ibn Awf al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to Bahrain to bring its tribute. He returned with wealth from Bahrain, and the Ansar heard of Abu Ubaydah's arrival, so they came to the Dawn Prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed and was leaving, they presented themselves to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw them and then said: "I suppose you have heard that Abu Ubaydah has arrived with something from Bahrain?" They said: Indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Rejoice and hope for what will gladden you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out before those who came before you, so that you compete for it as they competed for it, and it destroys you as it destroyed them." Agreed upon.

A warning to whoever has the world opened up to him about its evil outcome and the evil of its trial. Competing for the world may drag a person into the corruption of his religion. Not being at ease with the adornments of the worldly life, because of the destruction and harm therein. Wealth, if it is not bound by the controls of the Sacred Law, leads to corruptions that exceed the corruptions of poverty.
