عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الخُدْريِّ رضيَ اللهُ عنه أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا حُلْوَةٌ خَضِرَةٌ، وَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعالى مُسْتَخْلِفُكُم فِيهَا، فَيَنْظُرُ كَيْفَ تَعْملُونَ، فاتَّقُوا الدُّنْيَا، واتَّقُوا النِّسَاءَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The world is sweet and green, and Allah the Exalted has made you successors in it, and He will observe how you act. So beware of the world, and beware of women." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
حلوة خضرة: أي جامعة للوصفين المحبوبين للذوق والبصر. مستخلفكم فيها: أي جعلكم الله خلفاء فيها، جعل بعضكم يخلف بعضًا، فلا تتصرفوا بما لم يأذن لكم به. فاتقوا الله: افعلوا أوامره واتركوا نواهيه. واتقوا النساء: احذروا فتنة النساء وكيدهن.
Sweet and green: that is, combining the two qualities beloved to the taste and the sight. Has made you successors in it: that is, Allah has made you successors in it, making some of you succeed others, so do not dispose of it in ways He has not permitted you. So fear Allah: carry out His commands and abstain from His prohibitions. And beware of women: be cautious of the trial of women and their guile.

ليس معنى الحديث أن يتخلى الإنسان عن الدنيا ولا يعمرها، وإنّما المعنى: احذروا من ان تغركم الدنيا. إذا فسدت المرأة، فسد المجتمع، وإذا تبرجت المرأة، واستعرضت بزينتها فعلى المجتمع السلام. الإنسان يجب عليه أن يقوم بما أمره الله ويترك ما نهى عنه ولا يغتر بالحياة الدنيا.
The meaning of the hadith is not that a person should abandon the world and not develop it; rather the meaning is: beware of being deluded by the world. If the woman becomes corrupt, society becomes corrupt; and if the woman flaunts herself and displays her adornment, then farewell to society. A person is obliged to perform what Allah has commanded and to abandon what He has forbidden, and not to be deluded by the worldly life.
