عَن المُسْتَوْرِدِ بْنِ شدَّادٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مَا الدُّنْيَا في الآخِرَةِ إِلاَّ مِثْلُ مَا يَجْعَلُ أَحدُكُمْ أُصْبُعَهُ في الْيَمِّ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ يَرْجِعُ؟» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This world, in comparison to the Hereafter, is no more than what one of you gets when he dips his finger into the sea: let him consider with what it comes back." ما الدنيا: أي ما مثلها أو نعيمها أو زمانها في الآخرة: أي في جانبها أو بالنظر إليها. اليَمّ: البحر. بم يرجع: أي بأي شيء يرجع أحدكم إصبعه من الماء.
"This world": meaning its likeness, its bliss, or its lifespan. "In comparison to the Hereafter": meaning beside it or when considered against it. "Al-yamm": the sea. "With what it comes back": meaning with what one of you's finger returns after being dipped in the water.
