عن أبي هريرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنه قال: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «انْظُرُوا إلى منْ هوَ أَسفَلَ منْكُمْ وَلا تَنْظُرُوا إلى مَنْ هو فَوقَكُم؛ فهُوَ أَجْدرُ أَن لا تَزْدَرُوا نِعمةَ اللهِ عَليْكُمْ» متفقٌ عليه وهذا لفظ مسلمٍ. وفي رواية البخاريّ: «إِذا نَظَر أَحَدُكُمْ إلى مَنْ فُضِّلَ عليهِ في المالِ وَالخَلْقِ، فلْيَنْظُرْ إلى مَنْ هو أَسْفَل مِنْهُ».
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look at those who are below you and do not look at those who are above you, for this is more fitting so that you do not belittle the favor of Allah upon you." [Agreed upon; this is the wording of Muslim] In the narration of al-Bukhari: "When one of you looks at someone who has been favored above him in wealth and physical form, let him look at one who is below him."

أسفل منكم: المراد من هو أدنى منكم في أمور الدنيا. أجدر: أحق وأولى. أن لا تزدروا: أي أن لا تستصغروا وتحتقروا. الخَلْق: أي الشكل والصورة التي خُلِق عليها.
"Below you": what is meant is whoever is lower than you in worldly matters. "More fitting": more deserving and more proper. "So that you do not belittle": meaning that you do not deem small and despise. "Physical form": meaning the shape and appearance in which one was created.

استحباب نظر المسلم لمن هو أدنى منه في أمور الدنيا، ليزداد اعترافنا بما عندنا من نعم فنشكر الله عليها. نظر الإنسان إلى من هو أعلى منه مالًا ودُنيا يؤدّي إلى التسخّط على ما قدّر الله له والغفلة عن شكر نِعمه عليه. نظر الإنسان إلى من هو أعلى منه دينًا يُحفزه على المزيد من الطاعة والإقبال على الله تعالى بالعبادة.
The recommendation that the Muslim look at one who is below him in worldly matters, so that our acknowledgment of the blessings we have increases and we thank Allah for them. A person's looking at one who is above him in wealth and worldly matters leads to discontent with what Allah has decreed for him and heedlessness of thanking Him for His blessings upon him. A person's looking at one who is above him in religion spurs him to greater obedience and turning to Allah the Exalted in worship.
