عن أبي هريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عنه، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «تَعِسَ عبْدُ الدِّينَارِ وَالدِّرْهَمِ وَالقَطِيفَةِ وَالخَمِيصَةِ؛ إِنْ أُعطِيَ رَضِيَ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يُعطَ لَمْ يَرْضَ» رواه البخاري .
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wretched is the slave of the dinar, the dirham, the soft garment, and the striped cloak: if he is given, he is pleased, and if he is not given, he is displeased." [Reported by al-Bukhari]

تعس: من التعاسة ويراد بها هنا: الهلاك. القطيفة: نوع من القماش يعرف اليوم بـ "المخمل". الخميصة: ثوب من صوف أو نحوه معلّم مخطّط.
"Wretched (ta'isa)": from wretchedness; what is meant here is destruction and ruin. "The soft garment (al-qatifah)": a kind of fabric known today as "velvet." "The striped cloak (al-khamisah)": a garment of wool or the like, marked with stripes.

التحذير من العبودية لغير الله. القطيفة والخميصة والدينار والدرهم هذه أمثلة لما ينشغل به الناس عن عبادتهم لربهم ويُسخّرون لها كل حياتهم وأوقاتهم ويبذلون في سبيل تحصيلها كل شيء. الحث على أن يكون الإنسان معتدل الحال في مراعاة لباسه من غير إكثار ولا إهمال. القناعة غنى وعزّ بالله. من علامات انشغال الإنسان عن ربّه بمثل هذه الأشياء: أنّه إن رزقه الله رزقا يعجبه رضي عن الله وإن رزقه بما لا يعجبه سخط على ربّه.
A warning against being enslaved to other than Allah. The soft garment, the striped cloak, the dinar, and the dirham are examples of the things that distract people from worshiping their Lord, to which they devote their entire lives and time, sacrificing everything to obtain them. Urging a person to be moderate in attending to his clothing, neither excessive nor neglectful. Contentment is true wealth and honor through Allah. Among the signs of a person being distracted from his Lord by such things is that if Allah grants him provision that pleases him he is content with Allah, and if He grants him what does not please him he becomes displeased with his Lord.
