عن أبي هريرة رضي اللهُ عنه، قال: لقَدْ رَأَيْتُ سبعِينَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ ، ما مِنْهُم رَجُلٌ عليه رداءٌ، إِمَّا إِزَارٌ ، وإِمَّا كِسَاءٌ، قدْ رَبطُوا في أَعْنَاقِهِمْ، فَمنْهَا مَا يبْلُغُ نِصفَ السَّاقَيْنِ، ومنْهَا ما يَبْلُغُ الكَعْبينِ، فَيجْمَعُهُ بيدِه كراهِيَةَ أَنْ تُرَى عوْرتُه» رواه البخاريّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw seventy of the People of the Bench (Ahl al-Suffah), and not one of them had an upper garment. They wore either a lower wrap or a cloak which they had tied around their necks. Some of these reached the middle of the shins, and some reached the ankles, so a man would gather it with his hand out of dislike that his private parts should be seen. [Reported by al-Bukhari]

أهل الصّفة: الصُّفة سقيفة في آخر مسجد رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم يجتمع بها فقراء المهاجرين، وكانوا يتفاوتون في العدد يزيدون وينقصون. الرداء: ما يستر أعالي البدن فقط. الإزار: ما يستر أسافل البدن فقط.
"The People of the Bench (Ahl al-Suffah)": the Suffah was a shaded platform at the rear of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque where the poor among the Emigrants gathered; their number varied, increasing and decreasing. "The upper garment (rida')": that which covers only the upper part of the body. "The lower wrap (izar)": that which covers only the lower part of the body.

الحثّ على حمد الله تعالى على ما أعطانا من نعم الطعام والشراب والملبس. كثرة المال والغنى لا تعني رضى الله تعالى عن من أعطاه هذه النعم؛ فهؤلاء أتقياء المسلمين وفيهم فقر وحاجة. على المسلم أن لا يزدري أحدا بسبب قلّة ماله أو رداءة ثيابه، فما يُدريك لعل له من المنزلة عند الله القدر الكبير. أهل الصّفة لم يكونوا يتقصّدون لبس ثياب بهذه الكيفية، لأنّ فيها احتمال انكشاف العورة، والصحابة منزّهون عن التساهل والتهاون في هذا، ولكن كان هذا اضطرارًا فهم لا يجدون غير هذا من الثياب. المطلوب التأسي برسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم، فقد كان أزهد النّاس وأنظفهم وأسترهم وأجملهم صلّى الله عليه وسلّم.
Urging praise of Allah the Exalted for the blessings of food, drink, and clothing He has granted us. Abundant wealth and riches do not signify Allah the Exalted's pleasure with the one given these blessings; for these were among the most pious of Muslims, yet they experienced poverty and need. The Muslim should not belittle anyone because of his scant wealth or shabby clothing, for who knows—perhaps he holds a great rank with Allah. The People of the Bench did not deliberately wear their clothing in this manner, since it carried the risk of exposing the private parts, and the Companions are far above being lax or negligent in this matter; rather, this was out of necessity, for they found no other clothing. What is required is to emulate the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for he was the most ascetic, the cleanest, the most modest in covering himself, and the most handsome of people (peace and blessings be upon him).
