Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my shoulders and said: "Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer." Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) used to say: When evening comes, do not expect to see the morning, and when morning comes, do not expect to see the evening. Take from your health for your sickness, and from your life for your death. [Reported by al-Bukhari]

They said in explaining this hadith: its meaning is: Do not incline toward this world, nor take it as a homeland, nor tell yourself that you will remain long in it or be preoccupied with it, nor attach yourself to anything of it except what a stranger attaches to in a land that is not his homeland, and do not busy yourself in it with what a stranger who intends to return to his family does not busy himself with. The Prophet's taking hold of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar's shoulders is evidence of his love for him and of his drawing his attention to the importance of what he was telling him. Urging promptness in performing everything in its proper time. A warning against long-drawn hopes; that is, that the Muslim should not be heedless of the reality of death, which comes suddenly, forgetting it while preoccupied with the affairs of life, and so failing to prepare for it, instead postponing righteous deeds and repentance to a time he himself does not even know. Expecting death at any moment of night or day, because that calls one to soundness of deeds and saves one from slackness and laziness. Urging the seizing of opportunities for greater obedience and not being slow in it. Health and life are two prizes for the believer which he must benefit from through good deeds, so he should not squander them on what does not benefit him in his Hereafter.
