Abu al-'Abbas Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed by which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me.' He said: "Be detached from this world and Allah will love you, and be detached from what people possess and people will love you." [A good (hasan) hadith reported by Ibn Majah and others with good chains of transmission]
"Be detached (izhad)": asceticism (zuhd) is to abandon a thing out of disinterest in it; that is, turn away from this world, regarding it as small and worthless.

Abstaining from the unlawful, being cautious of the doubtful, giving thanks for the lawful, and spending it in legitimate avenues. That the wealth and goods of this life should be in a person's hand and not in his heart, and that everything in it is a means and not an end. Asceticism is not impoverishment, begging, abasement, and idleness; rather it is contentment of the soul and self-restraint, and the sacrifice of wealth and self in the cause of Allah. The Muslim must not covet the possessions and belongings of people, for this is a blameworthy trait through which hatred, aversion, and enmity arise. Love of this world is blameworthy when it is preferring the desires of the soul and being preoccupied with other than the Truth, Glorified and Exalted; but loving it in order to do good and assist creation is not blameworthy—rather it is worship and obedience to Allah the Exalted.
