عن النُّعْمَانِ بنِ بَشيرٍ، رضيَ اللهُ عنهما، قالَ: ذَكَر عُمَرُ بْنُ الخَطَّاب رضيَ اللهُ عنه ما أصابَ النَّاسُ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا، فقال: لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَظَلُّ الْيَوْمَ يَلْتَوي ما يَجِدُ من الدَّقَلِ يمْلأُ بِهِ بطْنَهُ. رواه مسلم.
Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the worldly comforts that people had acquired, and said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spend an entire day writhing in hunger, unable to find even poor-quality dates to fill his stomach. يظلّ: يمضي عليه النّهار كله. يلتوي: كناية عن الجوع الشديد. الدَّقَلُ: رَدِيء التَّمْرِ.
Yazallu: the whole day passes over him. Yaltawi: a figurative expression for severe hunger. Al-daqal: the inferior, poor-quality kind of dates.

رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم هو أحب الخلق إلى الله ومع ذلك تمر عليه أيامٌ وليالٍ لا يجد فيها حتى رديء الطعام. أنّ الدنيا لا تساوي عند الله شيئا إذ لم تكن هنيئةً لأحبّ عباده إليه، فكيف ننشغل بها عنه سبحانه. الحثّ على الصبر على مُرّ الدّنيا والبلاء فيها. على المسلم ألا يغتر بالدنيا، بل يتذكر حال سادات المسلمين وأتقيائهم. النبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم أسوة للأغنياء في التقلّل من متاع الدّنيا، وأسوة للفقراء في الصبر على قليل نصيبهم فيها.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most beloved of creation to Allah, yet days and nights would pass during which he could not find even the poorest of food. This world is worth nothing in the sight of Allah, for it was not made pleasant even for the most beloved of His servants to Him; so how can we let it distract us from Him, the Exalted. An encouragement to be patient with the hardships of this world and the trials within it. The Muslim should not be deceived by this world, but should remember the condition of the foremost and most God-fearing of the Muslims. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is a model for the wealthy in taking little of the world's pleasures, and a model for the poor in patiently enduring their small share of it.
