Riyad Al Salihin

Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking the Face of Allah, the Exalted, so our reward became due upon Allah. Among us were some who died without having consumed any of their reward; among them was Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was killed on the Day of Uhud and left behind only a striped woolen cloak. When we covered his head with it, his feet were exposed, and when we covered his feet with it, his head was exposed. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to cover his head and to place some idhkhir grass over his feet. And among us were some for whom the fruit ripened, and they were harvesting it. [Agreed upon]

Naltamisu wajha Allah: meaning we strive for sincerity to Allah, the Exalted. Fa-waqa'a ajruna: it was established and recorded. Lam ya'kul min ajrihi: meaning he received nothing of the wealth; eating is used because it is the most important purpose of acquiring wealth, and this alludes to the spoils gained from the conquests that came later. Al-namirah: a colored cloak made of wool. Al-idhkhir: a sweet-smelling plant. Ayna'at: it ripened. Yahdibuha: he plucks and gathers it, referring to the worldly gains opened up to them and the prosperity they came to enjoy.

An explanation of the merit of emigration and the reward of those who emigrate sincerely for the sake of Allah, the Exalted. The merit of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He was Abu 'Abd Allah, among the foremost to embrace Islam and to emigrate. He abandoned wealth, comfort, and luxury out of desire for what is with Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Madinah along with 'Abd Allah ibn Umm Maktum, and they would recite the Qur'an and teach the people Islam. He witnessed Badr and was killed as a martyr on the Day of Uhud in the third year after the Hijrah, and he was the standard-bearer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The reward of the God-fearing may come either immediately in this world, or deferred in the Hereafter, or in both together.
