عن عبدِ اللهِ بنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، رضيَ اللهُ عنه، قال: قال رجُلٌ للنَّبِيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليْهِ وسلَّمَ: يا رسولَ اللهِ، واللهِ إِنِّي لأُحِبُّكَ، فقال له: «انْظُرْ ماذا تَقُولُ؟» قال: واللهِ إِنِّي لأُحِبُّكَ، ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، فقال: «إِنْ كُنْتَ تُحبُّنِي فَأَعِدَّ لِلْفَقْرِ تِجْفَافًا، فإِنَّ الفَقْرَ أَسْرَعُ إلى من يُحِبُّني مِنَ السَّيْلِ إلى مُنْتَهَاهُ» رواه الترمذي وقال حديث حسن.
'Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I truly love you. He said to him: "Consider well what you are saying." The man said: By Allah, I truly love you — three times. He said: "If you love me, then prepare an armor against poverty, for poverty comes more swiftly to those who love me than a torrent to its destination." تِجْفَاف: هُوَ شَيْءُ يُلْبَسُهُ الفَرسُ لِيُتَّقَى بِهِ الأَذَى، وَقَدْ يَلْبَسُهُ الإِنْسَانُ. إلى منتهاه: إلى مكان وصوله.
Tijfaf: something a horse is clothed with to ward off harm, and a person may also wear it. Ila muntahahu: to the place where it arrives.

الزهد في الدنيا وعدم الانغماس فيها دليل على صدق محبة النبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم. المحب الصادق يجب عليه أن يتصف بصفات محبوبه. كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يتعوذ من الفقر، والمقصود عدم المبالغة في جمع الدنيا والاشتغال عن الآخرة.
Renunciation of this world and not becoming immersed in it is a proof of the sincerity of one's love for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The sincere lover must take on the qualities of his beloved. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from poverty; what is intended here is not going to excess in amassing worldly goods and being distracted from the Hereafter.
