Riyad Al Salihin

Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two hungry wolves let loose among a flock of sheep do not cause more harm to it than a person's greed for wealth and status does to his religion." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who said it is a good and authentic (hasan sahih) hadith.

More harm to it: more destructive to the flock of sheep. Status: rank and prestige.

Greed for amassing wealth, and greed for attaining rank and elevation, corrupts one's religion, because preferring this world over the Hereafter is evident in both. Islam never forbade earning lawful wealth; it only forbade greedily craving the two desires of wealth and status.
