عن أبي هريرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنهُ، عن النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «أَصْدَقُ كَلِمَةٍ قَالَهَا شَاعِرٌ كَلِمَةُ لَبِيدٍ: أَلا كُلُّ شيْءٍ ما خَلا اللهَ بَاطِلُ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The truest word ever spoken by a poet is the word of Labid: "Indeed, everything besides Allah is vain."" Agreed upon.

كلمة: المراد بها جملة مفيدة مطابقة للواقع. لبيد: هو لبيد بن ربيعة بن مالك العامري أحد الشعراء الفرسان الأشراف في الجاهلية من أهل عالية نجد، أدرك الإسلام ووفد على النبيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، ويعد من الصحابة، ترك الشعر بعد إسلامه، سكن الكوفة وعاش عمرًا طويلًا. ما خلا الله: أي ما عدا الله وصفاته. باطل: هالك، زائل أي يقبل البطلان والهلاك.
Word: what is meant is a meaningful sentence that corresponds to reality. Labid: he is Labid ibn Rabi'ah ibn Malik al-Amiri, one of the noble knight-poets of the pre-Islamic era from the people of the highlands of Najd. He lived to witness Islam, came as a delegate to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and is counted among the Companions. He abandoned poetry after embracing Islam, settled in Kufah, and lived a long life. Besides Allah: that is, other than Allah and His attributes. Vain: perishing and passing away, that is, subject to nullity and destruction.

استشهاد النبي صلّى الله عليه وسلّم بشعر لبيد وشهادته له بأنه شاعر. أن إنشاد الشعر ليس بممنوع في الإسلام إذا كان لغرض شريف. نقصان الحياة الدنيا وقلتها مهما طالت إلى جنب الآخرة، لأن مصيرها إلى الفناء والهلاك.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cited the poetry of Labid and bore witness for him that he was a poet. Reciting poetry is not forbidden in Islam if it is for a noble purpose. The deficiency and brevity of this worldly life, however long it may last, in comparison to the Hereafter, because its destiny is to perish and pass away.
