A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) never ate their fill of barley bread for two consecutive days until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away." Agreed upon. In another narration: "The family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) never ate their fill of wheat bread for three consecutive nights from the time he came to Madinah until he passed away."

The Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) turning away from this world and his asceticism toward it, even though he could have sought it and become the wealthiest of people. Barley and wheat bread and the like are among the simplest of things today; so which of us gives thanks to Allah the Exalted for the blessing of bread? The virtue of contentment, frugality, and avoiding asking from others despite hunger. A Muslim should not grow weary at times of straitened living, for this world has its sweetness and its bitterness, a day of ease and a day of hardship, and this befell the most beloved of creation to Allah.
