عن أبي سعيدٍ المَقْبُرِيِّ رضي الله عنه، عَنْ أبي هُرَيرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنه أَنه مَرَّ بِقَومٍ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ شَاةٌ مَصْلِيَّةٌ، فَدَعَوْهُ فَأَبى أَنْ يَأْكُلَ، وقال: "خَرج رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم من الدُّنيا ولَمْ يشْبَعْ مِنْ خُبْزِ الشَّعِيرِ" رواه البخاري .
Abu Sa'id al-Maqburi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by some people who had a roasted sheep before them. They invited him, but he refused to eat and said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world without ever having eaten his fill of barley bread." ربما رأى أبو هريرة رضي الله عنه من هؤلاء احتفاءً مبالغًا فيه بهذا الطعام فأراد نصحهم وتوجيههم بذكره لحال رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم. أنّ أبا هريرة استحضر حينئذ ما كان النبيّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فيه من شدّة العيش، فزهد في أكل الشاة. هذا لا ينافي أن النبي صلّى الله عليه وسلّم وأصحابه كانوا يشبعون أحيانًا، لكن الغالب من حالهم الإقلال من الطعام، وإيثار الجوع على الشبع.
Perhaps Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw in these people an excessive celebration over this food, so he wished to advise and guide them by mentioning the condition of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). At that moment Abu Hurayrah called to mind the hardship of living that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) endured, so he abstained from eating the sheep. This does not contradict the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions sometimes ate their fill; but their prevailing condition was eating little and preferring hunger over satiety.
