عن أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنه قال: لَقدْ رَأَيْتُ سبْعينَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الصُّفَّةِ، ما مِنْهُم رَجلٌ عَلَيهِ رِدَاءٌ، إِمَّا إِزارٌ وإِمَّا كِسَاءٌ قَدْ ربطُوا في أَعْنَاقِهم، فمِنهَا ما يَبْلُغُ نِصفَ السَّاقيْنِ، وَمِنهَا ما يَبلُغُ الكَعْبَينِ، فيجمعُهُ بِيَدِهِ كَراهِيَةَ أَن تُرَى عَوْرَتُهُ. رواه البخاري
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw seventy of the people of the Suffah, and not one of them had an upper garment (rida'). They had either a lower garment or a cloak, which they had tied around their necks; some of these reached to the middle of the shins, and some reached to the ankles, so a man would gather it with his hand, disliking that his nakedness should be seen. أهل الصّفة: الصُّفة سقيفة في آخر مسجد رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم يجتمع بها فقراء المهاجرين، وكانوا يتفاوتون في العدد يزيدون وينقصون. الرداء: ما يستر أعالي البدن فقط. الإزار: ما يستر أسافل البدن فقط.
The people of the Suffah: the Suffah was a shaded portico at the rear of the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) where the poor among the Emigrants would gather; their number varied, increasing and decreasing. The upper garment (rida'): what covers only the upper part of the body. The lower garment (izar): what covers only the lower part of the body.

الحثّ على حمد الله تعالى على ما أعطانا من نعم الطعام والشراب والملبس. كثرة المال والغنى لا تعني رضى الله تعالى عمن أعطاه هذه النعم؛ فهؤلاء أتقياء المسلمين وفيهم فقر وحاجة. على المسلم ألا يزدري أحدا بسبب قلّة ماله أو رداءة ثيابه، فما يُدريك لعل له من المنزلة عند الله القدر الكبير. أهل الصّفة لم يكونوا يتقصّدون لبس ثياب بهذه الكيفية، لأنّ فيها احتمال انكشاف العورة، والصحابة منزّهون عن التساهل والتهاون في هذا، ولكن كان هذا اضطرارًا فهم لا يجدون غير هذا من الثياب. المطلوب التأسي برسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم، فقد كان أزهد النّاس وأنظفهم وأسترهم وأجملهم صلّى الله عليه وسلّم.
Encouragement to praise Allah the Exalted for the blessings of food, drink, and clothing He has granted us. Abundance of wealth and riches does not mean that Allah the Exalted is pleased with the one He has granted these blessings; for these were among the most pious of the Muslims, yet they had poverty and need. The Muslim should not look down on anyone on account of his scant wealth or shabby clothing, for how do you know? Perhaps he has a great rank with Allah. The people of the Suffah did not deliberately wear garments in this manner, for it carried the risk of exposing the nakedness, and the Companions are far above being lax or negligent in this. Rather it was out of necessity, for they could find no garments other than these. What is required is to follow the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for he was the most ascetic of people, the cleanest, the most covered, and the most beautiful (peace and blessings be upon him).
