Fadalah ibn Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer, some men would collapse from their standing posture in the prayer out of extreme hunger — and they were the People of the Bench (Ahl al-Suffah) — so that the bedouins would say: These are madmen. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he would turn to them and say: "If you knew what awaits you with Allah Most High, you would love to increase in poverty and need." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: an authentic hadith.

Consoling those in destitution and giving them glad tidings of reward for their patience, their abstinence, and the excellence of their striving. The hadith does not indicate that the Companions turned away from helping the poor among them; rather, it indicates the abstinence of those poor ones and people's lack of knowledge of their condition. The hadith does not encourage them to remain in poverty; rather, it indicates that what Allah has prepared for them in the Hereafter of reward is better than the fleeting goods of this world that a person is given.
