Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever begs from people in order to amass wealth is only asking for live coals, so let him ask for little or much." [Muslim]

The basic principle is that a Muslim's wealth may not be taken without a rightful claim, nor without his consent. For this reason, some people resort to deception by showing others their poverty and need so that they will feel pity and give them from their wealth, while in reality they are not poor but beg people in order to increase their wealth, or because it is easy earnings for them. This act may involve deceit, fraud, and trickery, and it may sometimes drive a person to lying and swearing oaths about it so that people believe him. For this reason the punishment of the one who does this is severe. The prohibition of begging without need. A warning to the one who takes begging people as a profession and a means of earning and living while he is capable of working.
