Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is afflicted by poverty and lays it before people, his poverty will not be relieved; but whoever lays it before Allah, then it is near that Allah will grant him provision, soon or later." Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: it is a good (hasan) hadith.

Faqah (poverty): need. Lays it before people: asks them to relieve it from him through their help to him. Will not be relieved: will not be met. Yushik (it is near): that is, it comes swiftly.

Encouragement to ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to take refuge in Him in times of hardship, for it is He who relieves them. The point is that whoever relies on people to meet his needs and neglects reliance on the One who gave these people and made them rich, will find no relief for his need; rather he may find humiliation and disgrace. The prohibition of asking people and discouragement from it, even if one is genuinely in need. There is no objection to asking people while holding the conviction that Allah Most High has subjected them to meet one's need.
