Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Zechariah (peace be upon him) was a carpenter." Narrated by Muslim.

Following the conduct of the prophets (peace and blessings be upon them). Encouragement to work and to earn lawfully, for carpentry is an honourable trade. The Muslim society must respect those who practise trades, for here are the prophets — the choicest of people and the most beloved to Allah Most High — who practised them and earned from them, and that did not disgrace them or diminish them in any way. The Muslim should not let the outward appearances of things distract him from their realities; for many a task that is wearying and exhausting in appearance is more beneficial to its doer — in peace of mind, sustenance for his dependants, and his reckoning before his Lord — than an easy, effortless task in appearance, when the first is lawful and the second unlawful.
