Riyad Al Salihin

Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'di Karib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one has ever eaten any food better than that he should eat from the work of his own hand, and indeed the Prophet of Allah, David (peace be upon him), used to eat from the work of his own hand." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

That the most wholesome food and the most pleasant living is what results from one's effort and is the yield of one's toil in lawful work. Encouragement to take up the means, and that this does not conflict with reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. The necessity of self-reliance in managing the affairs of life, that a person should not humiliate himself before others, and that people should not give in to laziness and begging; for Islam is the religion of life and righteous work for this world and the Hereafter.
