عَن عَدِيِّ بْنِ حاتمٍ رضي الله عنه: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
'Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Guard yourselves against the Fire, even with half a date." Agreed upon.
الشرح · explanation
اتّقوا النار: اجعلوا بينكم وبينها من العمل الصالح ما يحفظكم من دخولها. ولو بشقّ تمرة: ولو أن تتصدّقوا بنصف تمرة.
"Guard yourselves against the Fire": place between yourselves and it such righteous deeds as will protect you from entering it. "Even with half a date": even if it be that you give in charity half a date.

Encouragement to give charity according to one's ability, even if it be a small thing, and to adopt praiseworthy traits. The responsibility of a person for his deeds, so let him be diligent in performing the righteous deeds that will benefit him on the Day of Resurrection and shield him from the Fire.
