عَنْ أبي هُريرة رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قال رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مَا مِنْ يَوْمٍ يُصبِحُ العِبادُ فِيهِ إِلَّا مَلَكَانِ يَنْزِلانِ، فَيَقُولُ أَحَدُهُمَا: اللَّهُمَّ أَعطِ مُنْفِقًا خَلَفًا، وَيَقُولُ الآخَرُ: اللَّهُمَّ أَعطِ مُمْسِكًا تَلَفًا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no day in which the servants rise in the morning but that two angels descend; one of them says: 'O Allah, grant the one who spends a replacement,' and the other says: 'O Allah, grant the one who withholds destruction.'" أعط منفقًا: أي في سبيل الخير وهو يعم الواجب والمندوب. خلفًا: أي بدلًا وعوضًا، ويحتمل أن يكون ذلك في الدنيا أو في الأخرة. ممسكًا: ممتنعًا عن الإنفاق في الواجب والمندوب. تلفًا: هلاكًا، ويحتمل الدعاء بهلاك المال وذهابه أو ذهاب بركته أو هلاك نفس الممسك.
"Grant the one who spends": meaning in the way of good, which encompasses both the obligatory and the recommended. "A replacement": meaning a substitute and a recompense, which may be in this world or in the Hereafter. "The one who withholds": the one who refrains from spending in what is obligatory and recommended. "Destruction": ruin. This may refer to a supplication for the destruction and loss of the wealth, the loss of its blessing, or the destruction of the withholder himself.

Encouragement toward praiseworthy spending, which is spending in acts of obedience, upon one's dependents and guests, and in all righteous deeds, obligatory and voluntary. Making the one who spends aware that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, will recompense him with what is better than what he spent. That the angels have a supplication that is answered.
