عَنْ عبدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُما: أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: أَيُّ الإِسلامِ خَيْرٌ؟ قال: «تُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ، وَتَقْرَأُ السَّلامَ عَلى مَنْ عَرَفْتَ وَمَنْ لم تَعْرِفْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which aspect of Islam is best?" He said: "That you feed others and that you give the greeting of peace to those you know and those you do not know." Agreed upon.

أيُّ الإسلام: أيْ، أيُّ خصاله، أو أيُّ أهله وذويه أفضل. تطعم الطعام: على وجه الصدقة أو الهدية أو الضيافة ونحو ذلك. وتقرأ السلام: المراد به إفشاء السلام.
"Which aspect of Islam": meaning, which of its traits, or which of its people and adherents, is best. "That you feed others": by way of charity, gift, hospitality, and the like. "That you give the greeting of peace": what is meant is the spreading of the greeting of peace (salam).

الحضّ على بذل الطعام وإفشاء السلام استئلافًا للقلوب واستجلابًا لودها. حرص الصحابة على السؤال عن أكثر الأعمال ثوابًا ليلتزموا بها فيفوزوا بالقرب من ربهم. عدم التفريق بين النّاس في أداء الحقوق المشتركة بينهم، والسلام من حقوق المسلم على المسلم، فينبغي إفشاؤه حسب ما شرعه الله لنا لا أن نحصر ذلك في المعارف والأصدقاء ونترك السلام على من لا نعرفهم.
Encouragement to offer food and to spread the greeting of peace, so as to win over hearts and gain their affection. The Companions' eagerness to ask about the deeds with the greatest reward, so that they might adhere to them and attain nearness to their Lord. Not discriminating between people in fulfilling the mutual rights they share. The greeting of peace is among the rights of a Muslim over a Muslim, so it should be spread as Allah has prescribed for us, rather than confining it to acquaintances and friends and abandoning the greeting toward those we do not know.
