عَنْ عبدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُما قال: قالَ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «أَرْبَعونَ خَصْلَةً أَعلاهَا مَنِيحَةُ العَنْزِ، ما مِنْ عَاملٍ يعْملُ بخَصلَةٍ منها رَجَاءَ ثَوَابِهَا وَتَصْدِيقَ مَوْعُودِهَا، إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللهُ بِهَا الجَنَّةَ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيّ.
'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are forty traits, the highest of which is lending a she-goat. No one performs any one of these traits, hoping for its reward and believing in what is promised for it, but that Allah will admit him thereby into Paradise." Reported by al-Bukhari.

أربعون خصلة: وفي رواية: أربعون حسنة. منيحة العنز: المنيحة العطية، وكانت مخصوصة في عرفهم بالناقة أو الشاة تعار ليُنتفع بلبنها أو وبرها، ثم تُرد إلى صاحبها.
"Forty traits": in another narration: forty good deeds. "Lending a she-goat": al-manihah is a gift. In their custom it referred specifically to a she-camel or a ewe lent so that one might benefit from its milk or wool, then returned to its owner.

حاول بعض العلماء عدّ الأربعين خصلة، والأولى أن لا نحرص على تعدادها وحصرها لأنّه صلّى الله عليه وسلّم ترك ذلك ولعلّ الحكمة في إبهامها ألّا يحتقر الناس شيئًا من وجوه البرّ وإن قلّ، فربما كان تعيينها والترغيب فيها سببًا للزهد في غيرها من أبواب الخير. من أفضل أعمال الخير ما كان نفعها متعديًا إلى الغير. فضل الله تعالى ورحمتُه بتكثيره أعمال الخير وتنويعها، وقبوله ما قلَّ منها وما صغرَ مع صدق النية والقصد. أنَّ هذا الأجرَ إن كان مترتِّبًا على منيحة العنزِ فما دونَها، فما الظَّنُّ بما هو أعظَمُ منها.
Some scholars have attempted to enumerate the forty traits, but it is better not to be eager to count and confine them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left this undefined. Perhaps the wisdom in leaving it vague is that people should not belittle any avenue of righteousness, however small; for specifying them and encouraging them might become a cause for indifference toward other doors of good. Among the best of good deeds are those whose benefit extends to others. The grace and mercy of Allah, Exalted is He, in multiplying and diversifying good deeds, and in accepting the small and slight among them when accompanied by sincere intention and purpose. That if this reward is granted for lending a she-goat or less, then what of that which is greater than it?
