Abu Umamah Sudayy ibn 'Ajlan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O son of Adam, that you give of your surplus is better for you, and that you withhold it is worse for you; you will not be blamed for keeping what is sufficient. Begin with those whom you support, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand." Reported by Muslim.
"That you give of your surplus": meaning that you bestow it; the surplus is what exceeds the need a person has for himself and for those he supports. "You withhold it": you refrain from giving it and are miserly with it. "What is sufficient": that which fulfills one's need. "Those whom you support": such as one's wife, relative, servant, and riding-beast, because their right is obligatory, and that is superior to what is merely recommended. "The upper hand": the one that spends; and it is said: the one that refrains from asking.

Encouragement to earn, work, and spend, and discouragement from begging. Whoever lives at the level of mere sufficiency incurs no blame or reproach, and this is not a defect of which a person should be ashamed. There is no censure of a person's saving an amount of wealth equal to the needs of his dependents. Encouragement to spend the surplus beyond one's need in avenues of good and righteousness; withholding this surplus may be harmful to a person if there are among the people those who need it to sustain their lives. A person is obliged to begin first with the obligatory maintenance of his dependents, because spending upon them is an individual obligation, whereas spending upon others is either a communal obligation or recommended.
