عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قَسَمَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَسْمًا، فَقُلتُ: يا رسولَ اللهِ، لَغَيْرُ هَؤُلاَءِ كَانُوا أَحَقَّ بهِ مِنْهُمْ؟ قال: «إِنَّهُمْ خَيَّرُوني أَنْ يَسأَلُوني بالْفُحْشِ، أَوْ يُبَخِّلُوني، وَلَستُ بِبَاخِلٍ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a distribution, so I said: "O Messenger of Allah, surely others than these were more deserving of it than they?" He said: "They gave me the choice either of their asking me coarsely or of their calling me miserly, and I am no miser." Reported by Muslim.

إنهم خيروني أن يسألوني بالفحش أو يبخّلوني: أي ألحّوا عليّ في السؤال لضعف إيمانهم، فإمّا أن يسألوه بطريقة فظّة فاحشة، فإن امتنع عن إعطائهم نسبوه إلى البخل، فاختار صلّى الله عليه وسلّم أن يعطيهم مداراةً وتألفًا لهم، إذ ليس البخل من خلقه.
"They gave me the choice either of their asking me coarsely or of their calling me miserly": meaning they pressed me persistently in asking, on account of the weakness of their faith, so that they would either ask him in a harsh, coarse manner, and if he refrained from giving them they would attribute miserliness to him. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) chose to give them, conciliating and winning them over, since miserliness was not part of his character.

ما كان عليه صلى الله عليه وسلم من عظيم الخلق والصبر والحلم والإعراض عن الجاهلين. ذم الإلحاح في السؤال. جواز دفع المال مداراة لأهل الجهالة ولتألّفهم حتى تتشرب قلوبهم حقيقة الإيمان، ولا تَحملنا سوء أخلاقهم على ترك دعوتهم والصبر عليهم، لعل الله يهديهم.
The magnificent character, patience, forbearance, and turning away from the ignorant that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) possessed. The censure of persistence in asking. The permissibility of giving wealth to conciliate the ignorant and win them over, so that their hearts may absorb the reality of faith. Their bad character should not lead us to abandon calling them and being patient with them, for perhaps Allah will guide them.
