Jubayr ibn Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While he was traveling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on his return from Hunayn, the Bedouins clung to him, asking him persistently, until they forced him against a thorn-tree and it snatched away his cloak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped and said: "Give me back my cloak. If I had cattle equal in number to these thorn-trees, I would distribute them among you; then you would not find me miserly, nor a liar, nor a coward." Reported by al-Bukhari.

The censure of the traits negated of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among them miserliness, lying, and cowardice. That the leader of the Muslims should not possess any of the blameworthy traits. The forbearance, excellent character, abundant generosity, and patience the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) possessed in bearing the rudeness and roughness of the Bedouins. The permissibility of a person describing himself with the praiseworthy traits he embodies when there is need, out of fear that ignorant people may think otherwise of him; and this is not part of blameworthy boasting.
