عَن أبي هريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: عنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «بيْنَما رَجُلٌ يَمشِي بِفَلاةٍ مِن الأَرض، فَسَمِعَ صَوتًا في سَحَابَةٍ: اسقِ حَدِيقَةَ فُلانٍ، فَتَنَحَّى ذلكَ السَّحَابُ، فَأَفْرَغَ مَاءَهُ في حَرَّةٍ، فإِذا شَرْجَةٌ من تِلْكَ الشِّراجِ قَدِ اسْتَوعَبَتْ ذلِكَ الماءَ كُلَّهُ، فَتَتَبَّعَ الماءَ، فإِذا رَجُلٌ قَائِمٌ في حَدِيقَتِهِ يُحَوِّلُ المَاءَ بمِسْحَاتِهِ، فقال له: يا عَبْدَ اللهِ، ما اسْمُكَ؟ قال: فُلانٌ، للاسْمِ الَّذِي سَمِعَ في السَّحَابَةِ، فقال له: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ لِمَ تَسْأَلُنِي عَنِ اسْمِي؟ فَقَال: إنِّي سَمِعْتُ صَوتًا في السَّحَابِ الَّذِي هذَا مَاؤُهُ يقُولُ: اسقِ حَدِيقَةَ فُلانٍ لاِسْمِكَ، فما تَصْنَعُ فِيها؟ فقال: أَمَّا إِذْ قُلْتَ هَذَا، فَإنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلى ما يَخْرُجُ مِنها، فَأَتَّصَدَّقُ بثُلُثِهِ، وآكُلُ أَنا وعِيالي ثُلُثًا، وأَردُّ فِيها ثُلثَهُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "While a man was walking through a barren tract of land, he heard a voice in a cloud saying, 'Water the garden of so-and-so.' That cloud moved aside and poured its water upon a stony tract, and one of the channels among those channels took in all of that water. He followed the water, and there was a man standing in his garden directing the water with his hoe. He said to him, 'O servant of Allah, what is your name?' He replied, 'So-and-so' -- the very name he had heard in the cloud. The man said to him, 'O servant of Allah, why do you ask me my name?' He said, 'I heard a voice in the cloud from which this water came saying, "Water the garden of so-and-so," with your name. So what do you do with it?' He said, 'Since you have said this, then I look at what it produces, and I give a third of it in charity, my family and I eat a third, and I return a third of it back into it.'" Reported by Muslim.

بفلاة: هي الأرض التي لا ماء فيها. حَرَّة: الأَرضُ المُلْبَسَةُ حِجَارَةً سُودًا شرجَة: هِيَ مسِيل الماء من الحرة إلى السهل. مسحاته: مجرفته. حديقة: أي بستان. ما يخرج منها: من حب وثمر.
A barren tract (falah): land in which there is no water. A stony tract (harrah): land covered with black rocks. A channel (sharjah): the watercourse running from the stony tract down to the lowland. His hoe (mishah): his shovel. Garden (hadiqah): that is, an orchard. What it produces: of grain and fruit.

فضل التقرّب إلى الله تعالى بالإنفاق في سبيل الله غير محدد، وإنّما تحدّده الحاجة أو الإنسان نفسه طواعيةً واختيارًا. أنّ من الملائكة من هو موكل بالأرزاق. أنّ لله جنود السماوات والأرض يسخّر ما يشاء لما يشاء. ربما يمكّن الله تعالى سمع الإنسان وبصره حتى يرى ما لا يراه غيره ويسمع ما لا يسمعه غيره وكل ذلك لحكمة يعلمها الله تعالى.
The virtue of drawing near to Allah by spending in His path is not fixed in amount; rather it is determined by need or by the person himself, willingly and by choice. That among the angels are some who are charged with provision. That Allah has the hosts of the heavens and the earth, employing whatever He wills for whatever He wills. Allah may enable a person's hearing and sight so that he sees what others do not see and hears what others do not hear, all for a wisdom that Allah knows.
