Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my shoulders and said, "Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer." And Ibn 'Umar used to say: When evening comes, do not expect the morning, and when morning comes, do not expect the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death. Reported by al-Bukhari.

The Prophet's taking hold of the shoulders of Abdullah ibn 'Umar is a sign of his love for him and of alerting him to the importance of what he was saying to him. The encouragement to hasten to do everything in its proper time. The warning against prolonged hopes, which is for the Muslim to be heedless of the reality of death that comes suddenly. Expecting death at any moment, whether by night or day, for that prompts the rectifying of one's deeds and saves one from slackness and laziness. Health and life are two prizes for the believer that he must benefit from through good deeds, so he should not squander them in what does not benefit him in his Hereafter. The encouragement not to lean upon this world, nor to take it as a homeland, nor to tell oneself that one will remain in it long, nor to be preoccupied with it; and to attach oneself to it only with what a stranger in a land not his own attaches himself to, and to occupy oneself in it only with what a stranger who intends to return to his family occupies himself with.
