The legitimacy of visiting graves; it is recommended, as a means of fulfilling the rights of one's parents, relatives, and friends. The command to visit graves is general, just as the prohibition had been general, applying to both men and women. Encouragement to visit graves because of the reminder of the Hereafter they bring, and the softening of hearts through the remembrance of death and its states, while observing the legal guidelines of visitation. The permissibility of abrogation (naskh) in the Islamic law: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at first forbade visiting graves because the people were close in time to the era of pre-Islamic ignorance with its idolatry, and because of what they used to do at graves such as wailing and other things that Islam prohibited; then the prohibition was abrogated after the creed of monotheism had become clear, the foundations of Islam had taken root, and its rulings had become manifest. The believer should remind himself of death, and that he will sooner or later be among the dead.
