Al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers within your soul and which you would hate for people to discover." Narrated by Muslim.
"Righteousness" (al-birr): a comprehensive word for all acts of goodness and traits of kindness. "Good character": what is meant is a cheerful countenance, refraining from harming others, doing good, and loving for people what one loves for oneself. "Sin" (al-ithm): a comprehensive word for all acts of evil and vice.

Encouragement toward good character in Islam. Sin has two signs: that the matter wavers in the soul and leaves within it unease and aversion, and that one hates for people to discover it. The hadith contains evidence that the sound soul has, by its original natural disposition (fitrah), a sense of the goodness or badness in words and deeds; then the law came with detailed clarification. If sin remains merely a passing thought and a person neither acts upon it nor speaks it, there is no sin upon him.
