Riyad Al Salihin

Nafi' reported: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) had fixed a stipend of four thousand for the early Emigrants, but he fixed three thousand five hundred for his own son. He was asked: "He is one of the Emigrants, so why have you given him less?" He replied: "His father emigrated with him," meaning he is not like one who emigrated by his own initiative. Reported by al-Bukhari.

Had fixed (farada): he assigned it from the funds of the public treasury. Four thousand: four thousand dirhams for each of the Emigrants every year, from the spoils of war, the fay', and the like, on account of the great role they played in the early days of Islam. For his own son: that is, 'Abdullah, who had emigrated with his father and mother when he was eleven years old.

The scrupulousness of al-Faruq, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he did not treat his own son as he treated the rest of the Emigrants, but rather reduced his stipend by five hundred dirhams. After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr, the world has not known a ruler as scrupulous and as detached from the wealth of the community as 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him and grant him contentment). The excellence of the early Emigrants for their precedence in embracing Islam and their support of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
