Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah loves the servant who is God-fearing, contented, and unobtrusive." Reported by Muslim.
God-fearing (al-taqi): one who fulfills the commands and avoids the prohibitions. Contented (al-ghani): what is meant is one rich in soul, that is, one who is satisfied with what he has been given, content with it, and pleased. Unobtrusive (al-khafi): one who is not well known among people, who keeps away from mingling with them in what is of no benefit, and who is eager to conceal his acts of obedience.

What is meant by "the servant" is the morally accountable person, whether male or female; and servitude to Allah is the finest of the descriptions of the accountable person, being the utmost degree of submission and obedience. Withdrawing from people while remaining steadfast in obedience to Allah Most High is of two kinds: ~A general, absolute withdrawal, which is only warranted in times of widespread trials, such as fear of losing one's religion or fear of being killed and the like. ~A relative, partial withdrawal, such as a Muslim's withdrawal from the people of sin, the places of immorality and debauchery, and gatherings of backbiting and slander. Encouragement toward piety, sincerity, and avoiding ostentation in order to win the love of Allah Most High. Withdrawing from people and cutting oneself off from mixing with them is a matter that differs according to circumstances. The believer who mingles with people and patiently endures their harm is greater in reward than the believer who does not mingle with people and does not endure their harm. If mixing with people involves cooperation in righteousness and piety, then it is commanded; but if it involves cooperation in sin and transgression, then it is forbidden.
