عَنْ عِيَاضِ بنِ حِمَارٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قال رسولُ الله صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «إِنَّ الله أَوحَى إِليَّ أَنْ تَواضَعُوا حتَّى لا يَفْخَرَ أَحَدٌ عَلى أَحدٍ، ولا يَبغِيَ أَحَدٌ على أَحَدٍ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
'Iyad ibn Himar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble, so that no one boasts over another, nor wrongs another." Reported by Muslim.

أوحى: الوحي الإعلام الخفي السريع، ويطلق على الإلهام وإلقاء المعنى في القلب. تواضعوا: التواضع عدم الاستكبار، والخضوع للحق، وترك الاعتراض على حكم الله. لا يفخر: لا يتباهى ويتعاظم بمكارمه ومناقبه من حسب ونسب. لا يبغي: لا يظلم ولا يعتدي.
Revealed (awha): revelation (al-wahy) is hidden, swift communication; it is also applied to inspiration and the casting of a meaning into the heart. Be humble (tawada'u): humility is the absence of arrogance, submission to the truth, and the abandonment of objection to the ruling of Allah. Do not boast (la yafkhar): one does not glory and exalt himself over others through his merits and distinctions, such as lineage and ancestry. Nor wrong (la yabghi): one does not oppress nor transgress.

وجوب التواضع وعدم التفاخر والاعتداء على الناس والحرص على ذلك إلى أن يكون هذا هو السائد والشائع في المجتمع المسلم. التواضع الواجب المحمود هو ما كان لله ولرسوله، ولعلماء الأمة وأفراد الناس، إذا قصد بذلك وجه الله تعالى، ومن كان كذلك أعلى الله قدره وطيّب ذكره، أما التواضع لأهل الظلم فذلك الذلّ الذي لا عز فيه وينبغي مقابلتهم بالعزة وليس المقصود جواز التكبر على الظالمين. من عقوبة المتكبر المتفاخر على النّاس، أنّ النّاس لا يقدّرونه بل يمقتونه.
The obligation of humility, refraining from boasting and transgressing against people, and striving for this until it becomes prevalent and widespread in the Muslim society. The obligatory, praiseworthy humility is that which is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, for the scholars of the community, and for individuals among the people, when one intends by it the Face of Allah Most High; whoever is like this, Allah raises his rank and makes his remembrance fragrant. As for humility before the people of oppression, that is a debasement in which there is no honor, and they should rather be met with dignity. This does not mean it is permissible to be arrogant toward oppressors. Part of the punishment of the arrogant one who boasts over people is that people do not esteem him; rather, they despise him.
