عَنْ أبي رِفَاعَةَ تَميم بن أُسَيدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: انْتَهَيْتُ إِلى رسول الله صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وهو يَخْطُبُ، فقلتُ: يا رسولَ اللهِ، رجُلٌ غَرِيبٌ جَاءَ يَسْأَلُ عنْ دِينِهِ، لا يَدري مَا دِينُهُ؟ فَأَقْبَلَ عَليَّ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، وتَركَ خُطْبتَهُ حتَّى انتَهَى إِليَّ، فَأُتِيَ بِكُرسِيٍّ، فَقَعَدَ عَلَيهِ، وجَعَلَ يُعَلِّمُني مِمَّا عَلَّمَه اللهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَى خُطْبَتَهُ، فأَتمَّ آخِرَهَا. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Rifa'ah Tamim ibn Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, here is a stranger who has come to ask about his religion, not knowing what his religion is." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and left his sermon until he reached me. A chair was brought, and he sat upon it and began teaching me from what Allah had taught him. Then he returned to his sermon and completed the rest of it. [Reported by Muslim]

Delivering a sermon: that is, the Friday sermon. To ask about his religion: that is, about the rulings of his religion.

The perfect humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his gentleness with the Muslims, his complete compassion for them, and his lowering of his wing to them. Hastening to answer the questioner and giving precedence to the most important matters over lesser ones; the scholars have agreed that whoever comes asking about faith and how to enter Islam must be answered and taught immediately. The permissibility of interrupting the sermon when there is a need to do so.
