عَنْ أَنسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم كانَ إِذَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا لَعِقَ أَصابِعهُ الثَّلاثَ، قال: وقال صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «إِذَا سَقطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ عَنْها الأَذى، ولْيَأْكُلْها، وَلا يَدَعْها للشَّيْطَانِ» وَأَمَر أَنْ تُسْلَتَ القَصْعَةُ، قالَ: «فَإِنَّكُمْ لا تدْرُونَ في أَيِّ طَعامِكُمُ البَركَةُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِم.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he ate food, would lick his three fingers. He said: And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When a morsel of any of you falls, let him remove the dirt from it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan." And he commanded that the dish be wiped clean, saying, "For you do not know in which part of your food the blessing lies." [Reported by Muslim]

لعق أصابعه: أي لحس بقايا الطعام ومصَّه منها. أصابعه الثلاث: الوسطى و السبابة و الإبهام فليمط: فليُزِل. الأذى: الوسخ. تُسْلَت: يتتبّع ما بقي فيها من طعام وتُمسح بالأصبع ونحوها. القصعة: اسم لإناء يسع أن يأكل عليه عشرة أشخاص، والمراد أيّ إناء ولو كان أصغر. البركة: الزيادة وثبوت الخير والانتفاع.
Licked his fingers: that is, he licked the remnants of food from them and sucked it off. His three fingers: the middle finger, the index finger, and the thumb. Let him remove: let him take away. The dirt: the filth. Be wiped clean: that what remains of food in it is sought out and wiped off with the finger or the like. The dish: a name for a vessel large enough for ten people to eat from, though what is meant is any vessel even if smaller. The blessing: increase, the establishment of good, and benefit.

استحباب لعق الأصابع قبل غسلها، وتتبع ما علِق فيها حتى لا يبقى فيها طعام يُلقى، فتحفظ النعمة من الضياع. مشروعية أخذ ما وقع من الطعام وإزالة ما علق عليه إذا لم يصعُب ذلك، لأن في ذلك حفظًا للنعمة. حرص الإسلام على المحافظة على المال وعدم ضياعه مهما كان قليلًا، وما أكثر ما يخالف الناس هذا الهدي النبوي في المحافظة على النعم وتراهم يلقون بالأطعمة في القمامة وعلى الطرقات وهناك ملايين من البشر يعانون المجاعة والفاقة. هذا الصنيع من رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم يدل على تواضعه وعلى المسلمين التأسي به في ذلك
The recommendation of licking the fingers before washing them and seeking out what clings to them, so that no food remains to be thrown away, thus preserving the blessing from being wasted. The legitimacy of picking up food that has fallen and removing what clings to it when that is not difficult, for in this is preservation of the blessing. Islam's keenness to preserve wealth and not waste it however little it may be. How often people contradict this prophetic guidance in preserving blessings - you see them throwing food into the rubbish and onto the roads while there are millions of people suffering famine and want. This practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates his humility, and Muslims should follow his example in it.
