عَنْ أبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، عنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «ما بعثَ اللهُ نَبِيًّا إِلَّا رعى الغنَمَ» قالَ أَصحابهُ: وَأَنْتَ؟ فقال: «نَعَمْ، كُنْتُ أَرْعَاهَا على قَرارِيطَ لأَهْلِ مَكَّةَ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah did not send any prophet but that he tended sheep." His Companions asked, "And you too?" He said, "Yes, I used to tend them for the people of Mecca for a few qirats." [Reported by al-Bukhari]

تواضع الأنبياء حيث لم يترفعوا عن العمل الشريف، وفيه شرف لرعاة الأغنام. الترغيب بالكسب الحلال وإن قل الكسب الحاصل منه. في رعي الغنم تأهيل على رعاية الناس وحسن معاشرتهم، لما يتحمله الإنسان برعي الغنم من الصبر عليها والسهر على مصالحها ودفع الأذى عنها وهذا من الحِكم في أنّ الأنبياء جميعًا قد رعوا غنمًا.
The humility of the prophets, in that they did not consider themselves above honourable work, and in this is an honour for shepherds. Encouragement toward lawful earnings even if the earnings gained from it are small. In tending sheep there is a preparation for tending people and dealing well with them, because of the patience a person bears with the sheep, staying awake to look after their interests, and warding off harm from them. This is among the wisdoms behind all the prophets having tended sheep.
