عَن أبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قال رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: « قال الله عزّ وجلّ: العِزُّ إِزاري، والكِبْرياءُ رِدَائي فَمَنْ يُنَازعُني عذَّبتُهُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: Might is My loincloth and pride is My cloak; so whoever contends with Me over them, I will punish him." Recorded by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
العزّ: القوّة والغلبة. الكبرياء: غاية العظمة والترفُّع. فمن ينازعني: يحاول أن يتصف بهما أو يدَّعيهما لنفسه ليكون كالمشارك لله فيهما.
Might: strength and dominance. Pride: the utmost greatness and exaltation. Whoever contends with Me: one who tries to lay claim to these attributes or arrogate them to himself, so as to be like a partner with Allah in them.

ينبغي للمسلم أن يتخلَّق بالتواضع، واستصغار النفس، وعدم التشبه بالجبارين. استحقاق العذاب لكلّ من يتظاهر بصفات العزّة على الناس والتكبّر عليهم لأنّهما لا يليقان بشأن الإنسان الضعيف. العزة بالإسلام وبطاعة الله ليست مقصودة هنا ولا يُنهى عنها المسلم، لكن المقصود التكبر على عباد الله والاعتزاز عليهم تكبرًا وتجبرًا سواء بجاهٍ أو قبيلة أو نسب وحسب ونحو ذلك. على المسلم البعد عن العبارات والجُمل التي تُنمّي في النفوس أمر الكبر والأنفة.
It befits the Muslim to cultivate humility, to regard himself as lowly, and not to imitate the tyrants. The deserving of punishment by everyone who displays attributes of might over people and shows arrogance toward them, for these two do not befit the state of weak man. The might that comes through Islam and through obedience to Allah is not what is intended here, nor is the Muslim forbidden from it; rather what is meant is arrogance toward the servants of Allah and lording it over them out of pride and tyranny, whether through rank, tribe, lineage, ancestry, and the like. The Muslim must keep away from expressions and phrases that nurture arrogance and haughtiness in the soul.
