عَن أبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «بيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي في حُلَّةٍ تُعْجِبُهُ نفْسُهُ، مُرَجِّلٌ رَأْسَهُ، يَخْتَالُ في مَشْيَتِهِ، إِذْ خَسَفَ اللهُ بِهِ، فهوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ في الأَرْضِ إلى يوْمِ القِيامةِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "While a man was walking in a fine two-piece garment, pleased with himself, his hair combed, strutting proudly in his gait, Allah caused the earth to swallow him, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection." حُلَّة: إزار ورداء، ولا تسمى حلّة إلّا إذا كانت جديدة. مُرجّلٌ رَأْسهُ: أَيْ مُمَشّطُه، المقصود اهتمامه بشعر رأسهُ. يَتَجلْجَل: أَيْ يغُوصُ وينْزِلُ.
A fine two-piece garment (hullah): a lower garment and a cloak; it is only called a hullah when it is new. His hair combed: that is, brushed, the point being his preoccupation with the hair of his head. Keep sinking: that is, plunging and descending.

حرمة الكبر والخيلاء والتحذير من مظاهرهما. سوء عاقبة من اتصف بالكبر والخيلاء وربما يعاقب على ذلك في الدنيا. نهى الإسلام عن الخيلاء في اللّبس والكلام والمشية وفي أيّ شيء، وتوعد على ذلك بالعذاب الأليم. لا تعارض بين حديث التجمّل وحبّ الله تعالى للجمال واللباس والطيب والمظهر الحسن وبين هذا الحديث، فكل ذلك جائز لكن بدون كبر أو خيلاء أو مخالفة شرعية أخرى.
The prohibition of arrogance and vanity, and a warning against their outward signs. The evil end of one characterized by arrogance and vanity; he may even be punished for it in this world. Islam forbade vanity in dress, speech, gait, and in anything whatsoever, and threatened a painful punishment for it. There is no contradiction between the hadith about adorning oneself and Allah's love of beauty, fine clothing, perfume, and a good appearance on the one hand, and this hadith on the other; all of that is permissible, but without arrogance or vanity or any other legal violation.
