Salamah ibn al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man will keep exalting himself until he is recorded among the tyrants, and so befalls him what befell them." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who said: it is a good (hasan) hadith.

Whoever imitates a people is recorded among them, and there befalls him of punishment what befell them. The Muslim should be mindful, in his companionship, to keep company with the humble, so that he may bind himself to the trait of humility and keep away from the arrogant and the vain.
