عَنِ الصَّعبِ بنِ جَثَّامَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: أَهْدَيْتُ رسُولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ حِمَارًا وَحْشِيًّا، فَرَدَّهُ عليَّ، فلمّا رأَى مَا في وَجْهي قالَ: «إِنَّا لَمْ نَرُدَّهُ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنَّا حُرُمٌ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Al-Sa'b ibn Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a wild donkey as a gift, but he returned it to me. When he saw the look on my face, he said: "We have only returned it to you because we are in a state of ritual consecration." Agreed upon.

The legitimacy of accepting a gift, and of excusing oneself from accepting it when doing so would involve a legal prohibition, and of consoling the heart of the giver when excusing oneself. The impermissibility of slaughtering game for the one in ihram if it is given to him alive; likewise it is not permissible for the one in ihram to eat from game if he knows it was hunted for his sake. Being mindful of those around you and knowing what brings them sorrow and what brings them happiness is part of good character, not affectation or excessive idealism. The Muslim's reviewing of himself, his conduct, and considering its effects is evidence of the loftiness of his soul, and it leads to pleasant company and good character.
