عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بنِ سمعانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: سأَلتُ رسُولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ عنِ البِرِّ والإِثْمِ فقالَ: «البِرُّ: حُسنُ الخُلُقِ، والإِثمُ: ما حاكَ في صَدْرَكَ، وكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ
Al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about righteousness and sin, and he said: "Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your breast and which you dislike that people should come to know of." الشرح · explanation
البِرّ: الخير والطاعة. الإثم: الشرّ والمعصية. حاك: تردد في نفسك تفعله أو لا تفعله، لكراهة النفس السويّة له.
Righteousness (al-birr): goodness and obedience. Sin (al-ithm): evil and disobedience. Wavers: hesitates within yourself, as to whether you should do it or not, because the sound soul finds it distasteful.

أن الخير في حسن الخلق، لأن صاحبه تبادر نفسه إلى محاسن الأفعال وترك رذائلها. الحث على حسن الخلق في الإسلام. من علامات معرفة أنّ هذا الأمر شرٌّ أو معصية أن تضِيق به نفس الإنسان سليم الفطرة، وألّا يحب أن يراه عليه أحد من الناس مخافة الملامة والتعيير. إذا بقي الإثم خاطرًا ولم يعمل الإنسان أو يتكلّم به فلا إثم عليه.
That goodness lies in good character, for its possessor's soul hastens toward noble deeds and the abandonment of base ones. The encouragement toward good character in Islam. Among the signs by which one knows that a matter is evil or a sin is that the soul of a person of sound natural disposition feels constrained by it, and that he does not wish anyone among the people to see him doing it, for fear of blame and reproach. If the sin remains merely a passing thought and the person does not act upon it or speak of it, then there is no sin upon him.
