Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing is weightier in the believer's scale on the Day of Resurrection than good character, and indeed Allah detests the obscene, foul-tongued person." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who said: it is a good (hasan) hadith.

Good character benefits in the Hereafter when faith is joined to it. The obscene, foul-tongued person is detested by Allah the Exalted and despised among people; he is a loser in this world and the Hereafter. It suffices the Muslim, of the virtues of good character, that Allah loves it; and it suffices him, of the effects of bad character, that Allah detests it. The Muslim does what Allah loves and abandons and forsakes what Allah detests.
