Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about what most admits people into Paradise, and he said: "Fear of Allah the Exalted and good character." And he was asked about what most admits people into the Fire, and he said: "The mouth and the private parts." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, who said: it is a good and sound (hasan sahih) hadith.

Encouragement toward God-consciousness (taqwa) and good character, and warning against disbelief, lying, and fornication. The hadith combined God-consciousness and good character, because God-consciousness sets right what is between a person and his Lord, while good character sets right what is between a person and people, in addition to earning him Allah's love. The joining of the mouth and the private parts as being the two most important causes of evil, because from the mouth issues foul speech such as disbelief, backbiting, tale-bearing, nullifying the truth, slandering people, and the like, while from the private parts issues fornication; so they are two causes of affliction and two paths to the Fire.
