عَنْ أبي هريرة رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: بَال أَعْرَابيٌّ في المسجِدِ، فَقَامَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْه لِيَقَعُوا فِيهِ، فقال النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «دَعُوهُ، وَأَرِيقُوا عَلى بَوْلِهِ سَجْلًا مِنْ مَاءٍ، أَوْ ذَنُوبًا مِنْ مَاءٍ، فَإِنَّما بُعِثتُمْ مُيَسِّرِينَ ولَمْ تُبْعَثُوا مُعَسِّرِينَ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A bedouin urinated in the mosque, and the people rose to set upon him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, and pour a bucket of water over his urine, for you have been sent to make things easy and not to make things difficult." Narrated by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
ليقعوا فيه: ليشتدوا في لومه وتعنيفه. دعوه: اتركوه. أريقوا: صُبّوا. السَّجْل: الدَّلوُ المُمْتَلِئَةُ ماءً، وكَذلِكَ الذَّنُوب. معسِّرين: مشدّدين.
To set upon him (li-yaqa'u fihi): to be harsh in rebuking and reprimanding him. Leave him (da'uhu): let him be. Pour (ariqu): spill out. Al-sajl: a bucket full of water; likewise al-dhanub. Making things difficult (mu'assirin): being harsh and severe.

حسن خلق النبيّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم ورأفته بالناس، وخاصة بالجاهل وتعليمه ما يلزمه من غير تعنيف. الرفق بالجاهل وأخذه باليسر، وعدم أذيته على إساءته، وتعليمه ما يصلحه. وجوب تطهير الأرض وتعيين الماء لإزالة النجاسة. الرفق في مثل هذا الحال أشد ما يكون تأثيرا في تقبل الدعوة والنصيحة، وأما العنف والشدة فربما تُسيء وتُنفِّر.
The good character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his compassion towards people, especially towards the ignorant, teaching them what they need without harshness. Gentleness with the ignorant, dealing with him with ease, not harming him for his offense, and teaching him what will set him right. The obligation to purify the ground, and the specifying of water for removing impurity. Gentleness in such a situation is the most effective means for the acceptance of the call and the advice, whereas harshness and severity may give offense and drive people away.
