A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that she said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Has a day come upon you that was harder than the day of Uhud?" He said: "Indeed I have suffered much from your people, and the worst I suffered from them was on the day of al-'Aqabah, when I presented myself to Ibn 'Abd Yalil ibn 'Abd Kulal, and he did not respond to me as I had hoped. So I set out, grief-stricken, walking without direction, and I did not come to myself until I was at Qarn al-Tha'alib. I raised my head, and there was a cloud that had cast its shade over me. I looked, and there was Jibril (peace be upon him) within it. He called out to me and said: 'Indeed Allah the Exalted has heard the words your people said to you and how they rejected you, and He has sent to you the angel of the mountains, that you may command him to do with them whatever you wish.' Then the angel of the mountains called out to me, greeted me with peace, and then said: 'O Muhammad, indeed Allah has heard the words your people said to you. I am the angel of the mountains, and my Lord has sent me to you so that you may give me your command. So what do you wish? If you wish, I will crush them between the two mountains.'" But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather I hope that Allah will bring forth from their loins those who will worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him." Agreed upon.

A demonstration of the Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) compassion toward his people, his patience with their harm, and his pardon of those among them who wronged him. The permissibility of grief — which is one of the human characteristics — befalling the prophets; and this was a noble grief, for it was over a religious matter. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not become angry for his own sake nor avenge himself for harm done to his body; rather he endured the harm for the sake of the call and counted it as a reward with Allah — and in this is an example for those who call to Allah in every time and place. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) eagerness to convey his message.
