Riyad Al Salihin

A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never struck anything with his hand, nor a woman, nor a servant, except when fighting in the cause of Allah. And he was never harmed in any way and then took revenge on the one who did it, unless something of the sanctities of Allah the Exalted was violated, in which case he would take retribution for the sake of Allah the Exalted. Narrated by Muslim.

He was harmed: the disbelievers inflicted harm upon him, such as wounding his head. Something of the sanctities of Allah was violated: a transgression was committed against the sanctities of Allah.

A demonstration of the forbearance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his pardon of harm done to his own person — even though retaliating for the purpose of discipline was permitted — because forgoing it is more excellent. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) becoming angry for the sake of Allah, his establishing the limits set by Allah upon those who deserved them without leniency, and his fighting the enemies of Allah in jihad to raise high the word of Allah the Exalted. Encouragement to pardon, to forbearance, and to bearing harm patiently, and to defending the religion of Allah the Exalted against whoever commits something forbidden. Human perfection is that a person be gentle where gentleness is called for, and severe in might where might and firmness are called for.
