'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) relating the story of one of the prophets — may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon them — whose people struck him and made him bleed, while he was wiping the blood from his face and saying: "O Allah, forgive my people, for indeed they do not know." Agreed upon.

The patience of the prophets and their endurance of harm in the course of conveying their call to the people. It is among the character of the prophets to meet ignorance with forgiveness and pardon. Not treating the ignorant in the same manner as their own deeds. Taking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a model in his character of bearing harm patiently, for his face was wounded and blood flowed from it on the day of Uhud, yet he did no more than say: "O Allah, forgive my people, for indeed they do not know."
