Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You must hear and obey, in your hardship and your ease, in what you find agreeable and what you find disagreeable, and even when others are given preference over you." [Muslim]

Your hardship and your ease: that is, in both states, adversity and prosperity, distress and comfort. What you find agreeable: that which your soul is eager for and desires to do, that is, in your state of energy and willingness. What you find disagreeable: that is, what a person dislikes and finds burdensome. When others are given preference over you: that is, their monopolizing of goods, positions, and gains for themselves or for those they favor, depriving you of them despite your deserving them.

The ruler must be just and strive for justice, seek the truth, and carry out the commands of the Sacred Law; he has his duty, and the subjects have theirs. The obligation of obedience in all circumstances, even if it sometimes entails hardship upon the one accountable, or the loss of some gains, giving precedence to the general welfare over private interest. The wise person is one who gives precedence to the general welfare and the warding off of general harm over the private harm that befalls him personally.
